What is a septal perforation?
A septal perforation is a hole perforation in the nasal septum —the tissue that separates the nostrils. It can occur as a result of previous nasal surgery, or as a result of a nasal fracture, and there are many more causes as well. A septal perforation is often thought of as resulting from cocaine use, but trauma or previous surgery are also common causes.
When a perforation is present, such symptoms may be noticed as:
- frequent crusting,
- bleeding,
- whistling while breathing,
- nasal obstruction,
- and rhinorrhea (runny nose)
